tax break

The federal government has eliminated the capital gains tax on listed stocks donated to charity. This means you would pay no income tax on stock shares donated to the Harvest Project. Gifts of stock and investments would be a great help to the Harvest Project as we work with the poor and vulnerable on the North Shore.

financial contributions

As a non-profit, grassroots organization, the Harvest Project relies on the generosity of the local community - individuals, businesses, service clubs, and churches - for its operation.

The Harvest welcomes your gifts in support of its mission to extend a hand up, not a hand out. These may be made using cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard, or money order, and are accepted in the following ways:

  • online through Canada Helps
  • in person or by mail
  • by phone (using Visa/MC)
  • using pre-authorized payment (from your bank account, Visa, or Mastercard)
  • through the United Way (designated to the Harvest Project)

We also welcome gifts of RRSPs, life insurance policies, stocks/bonds/mutual funds, trusts, and annuities through our Planned Giving Program.

(Tax receipts are issued for gifts of $20 or more.)

Businesses are encouraged to consider additional methods of contributing to the Harvest, such as:

  • enabling employees to donate through payroll deductions
  • matching employee donations
  • promoting the Harvest through your newsletter, website, or other communication vehicle
  • sponsoring a Harvest program or staff member
  • donating your company’s service or product
  • providing a staff member for a given period or project
  • hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Harvest

Volunteer Today

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Harvest Project. We rely on more than 150 regular volunteers to keep our programs running effectively. Our need for volunteers is constant, because without them the majority of our services could not be offered.

We require volunteers to help out in the following areas:

  • Administration - Assist staff members with various administrative tasks
  • Cleaning - Sweep, mop clean the kitchen and ensure the general tidiness of the building
  • Clothing Boutique - Sort incoming clothing and assist clients with the selection of appropriate attire for work or school
  • Data Entry - Transfer paper-based information to computer databases
  • Driving - Pick up donated food and deliver groceries to clients
  • Fundraising - Speak with business and community leaders in order to promote charitable giving
  • Grocery Store - Stock the grocery store and pack groceries for clients
  • Kitchen - Sort and bag incoming perishable foods, manage the coffee/snack service and prepare lunch for staff and volunteers
  • Reception - Greet clients and answer phones
  • Special Events - Act as an event coordinator or committee member and work at the Harvest Project booth at events
  • Warehouse - Sort, box and stock non-perishable foods

The Harvest Project provides volunteer work experience for students, individuals who are disabled, participants of employment programs and court-appointed community service workers. Corporate opportunities are also be available.

We are open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm. We ask that volunteers commit to a weekly four-hour shift for a minimum of three months; however, exceptions can be made. A letter of reference can be provided upon completion of 30 hours of service.
